DENVER (KDVR) — Multiple officers on Friday evening shot a man reportedly firing out of a vehicle in a park “full of people” in Northeast Park Hill, according to the Denver Police Department.

Police responded just after 5:30 p.m. to the park in the 3800 block of Olive Street, near the Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center, where police said multiple witnesses reported someone “circling the park here firing shots out of a vehicle,” Division Chief Ron Thomas said.

“We heard three shots then six shots so we went inside we were like, ‘Oh no,'” said Alana Reeb, who works near the park. “We watched a family with two kids run out of the park. So we knew it was bad. We knew they were shooting.”

“I heard a boom, and at first I thought it was fireworks, like, ‘Oh, great.’ Then I heard it again and I thought it was construction,” said Martina Goens, who has lived in a home across from the park for 38 years. “Then it was ‘boom, boom, boom, boom, boom’ — 20 of them. I told my son come out of the room those are gun shots!” 

“I was scared. I was unsafe in my home. My kids were unsafe. We could tell it was a good distance away but close enough you could still hear it — it’s too close. It’s too close to home,” Goens said.

Thomas said officers located the suspect vehicle on the east side of the park and saw him with a handgun. He said multiple officers fired several gunshots at the suspect when he refused commands to drop the weapon.

Thomas said officers rendered medical aid. An ambulance arrived on scene and transported the suspect to Denver Health, where his condition is unknown.

“Thankfully, no one was struck, but we don’t know what his intended target was,” Thomas said.

Police said the 3800 block of Olive Street, East 38th Avenue between Newport Street and Olive Street and East 39th Avenue between Olive Street and Oneida Street were closed for the investigation.
