DENVER (KDVR) — Denver Police said two officers shot a suspect multiple times after he threatened them with an assault rifle on Sunday. He later died at the hospital.

A liquor store clerk called 911 around 2:50 p.m. informing police a man with an assault rifle was near the store in the 1300 block of West Alameda Avenue, Denver Police Department Division Chief Ron Thomas said.

According to the clerk, the suspect walked into the Great American Beer Store with the assault rifle and told her he was out to “kill cops.” The woman told him to leave and immediately called 911. The employee also told FOX31’s Aimee Lewis, the man was a regular at the store and was very calm when he walked inside to buy alcohol. 

Officers arrived quickly, made contact with the suspect and commanded him to put down his weapon, Thomas said.

The suspect did not comply and moved toward officers, threatening them with the assault rifle, Thomas said. Both officers then fired at the suspect, striking him.

Lifesaving measures were performed and the suspect was transported to the hospital in an unknown condition, Thomas said.

The suspect is described as an adult Black male. Thomas said intent is unknown and the incident is being investigated.

Police have closed the area during the active investigation. Avoid Alameda and Lipan Street and Spyres and Lipan.
