BOULDER, Colo. (KDVR) — Boulder police arrested a 42-year-old man after he allegedly stabbed a Barnes & Noble manager Thursday afternoon.

Scott Schwelling is facing a felony first-degree assault charge for allegedly stabbing a 52-year-old man when he confronted him about supposedly stealing a bag of Gummy bears from the bookstore, the Boulder Police Department said.

Just after 3 p.m., police received a call that an employee had been stabbed at the store located at 2999 Pearl Street. Officers arrived within one minute of the call, searched the area and quickly took Schwelling into custody.

The arrest document said the manager was told by another employee that Schwelling had stolen a bag of Gummy bears and walked out of the store. The manager caught up with Schwelling in an area between the Car Toys· garage door and the Full Cycles bike shop at 2355 30th Street.

The manager and Schwelling had a face-to-face confrontation before Schwelling stabbed the manager with what police said was described as a small folding knife, the affidavit said.

The document said the manager was stabbed in the right side of the lower abdomen and received five staples to close the wound at the hospital and was released after treatment.

When police interviewed Schwelling, he denied stealing anything and claimed the manager attacked him after he accused him of stealing the bag of candy causing him to go into “self-defense mode.”

The Boulder Police Department said Schwelling told officers he was unhoused when he was arrested at an unsanctioned encampment.

Police discovered Schwelling had an outstanding failure to appear domestic violence warrant which was for a harassment charge.
