WHEAT RIDGE, Colo. (KDVR) — A homicide suspect driving the vehicle of the gas station owner they’re accused of shooting and killing on Thursday night was arrested in Evansville, Indiana on Friday morning.

The gas station owner was found dead at the Valero at 12300 W. 44th Ave. in Wheat Ridge around 8 p.m. Thursday.

The victim’s identity will be released by the coroner’s office. WRPD said he is a 53-year-old man from Nepal.

“This is a terrible tragedy; please keep the family and friends of the victim close to your hearts,” WRPD said.

During the investigation, police used video surveillance to determine that a suspect attacked the clerk, and then shot and killed him.

After that, police said the suspect took the victim’s vehicle and left.

Police said they put out a nationwide be on the lookout alert for the victim’s vehicle.

A fundraiser for the victim’s funeral and other related costs has been started by the Rocky Mountain Friends of Nepal, a community the victim was part of.

Suspect arrested in Indiana

Around 10:23 a.m. on Friday, Indiana State Police said they noticed a driver in a gray 2015 Nissan Pathfinder going 86 mph. A trooper tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver continued to speed away.

ISP said the driver reached speeds of over 90 mph before losing control, leaving the road, and rolling the vehicle several times.

The driver was not injured in the crash and was taken into custody.

While doing a vehicle registration inquiry, ISP said they learned the vehicle was stolen from Wheat Ridge and may have been involved in a homicide.

The suspect has been identified as Shawnathan Deangelo Chance, 26, of Dunn, North Carolina.

He is facing the following charges:

  • Murder (in Colorado)
  • Resisting law enforcement
  • Possession of a stolen vehicle
  • Reckless driving

Chance is being held in Posey County Jail in Indiana without bond.
