U.S. advances to gold medal game in women’s hockey

The U.S. Women’s hockey team beat Sweden 6-1 in a lopsided Winter Olympics semifinal Monday, February 17, 2014, in Russia’s Shayba Arena, earning a place in Thursday’s gold medal game.

SOCHI, Russia —  The United States is now just one win away from taking gold in women’s ice hockey.

The Americans beat Sweden 6-1 in a lopsided Winter Olympics semifinal Monday in Russia’s Shayba Arena, earning a place in Thursday’s gold medal game.

The United States, which fired 70 shots to Sweden’s nine, will next play the winner of Monday’s Canada-Switzerland semifinal.

Only the United States and Canada have won gold in Olympic women’s ice hockey tournaments since their debut in 1998.
