SOCHI, RUSSIA — X Games extraordinaire David Wise is now an Olympic champion.

The American won gold Tuesday in the men’s freestyle skiing halfpipe at the Winter Olympics near Sochi, Russia. His first of two runs in the finals garnered a score of 92, and that held up. Mike Riddle of Canada earned silver with a second-run score of 90.60.

Kevin Rolland of France won bronze with a score of 88.6.

Wise, the sport’s 2013 world champion, is regarded as one of the most technically precise and stylish skiers in the sport. He also has won three X Games titles in the men’s ski SuperPipe.

With Wise’s win, the United States was tied for third in the Sochi games’ gold-medal list at sixth. Germany had the most golds, with eight .The Netherlands and the United States have the most total medals so far, with 20 each.
