Lindsey Vonn ties 35-year-old World Cup record

DENVER — A year ago, Lindsey Vonn was a has-been. Today, she’s a co-world record holder.

With her win Sunday morning at the World Cup downhill race in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, Vonn tied Austrian Annemarie Moser-Proell’s 35-year-old record of 62 women’s Alpine skiing World Cup victories.

Vonn’s first World Cup victory was in the downhill at Lake Louise, Canada, on Dec. 3, 2004.

“It was just a tough day out there,” she told the Associated Press. “The snow was a little bit soft but I did the best that I could. I fought really hard and to have a 62nd win with my whole family here pretty much — I’m missing some brothers and sisters — it just feels amazing and it’s such a special day.”

Vonn, 30, is the most decorated skier in U.S. history, and is the only American woman to win gold in the downhill at the Olympics.

But her future, and even her legacy, were in serious question after she sustained a serious knee injury during a 2013 competition in Austria. She suffered through two surgeries and numerous false starts and setbacks on the road to recovery.
