EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — For many football fans, Mark Sanchez’s name is associated with the infamous “butt fumble” play he made in 2012.
The game was between the New York Jets and the New England Patriots on Nov. 22, 2012. At the time, Sanchez had been the starting quarterback for the Jets since 2009.
In front of a New York home crowd of 79,000 at MetLife Stadium and a prime time TV audience of 20 million, Sanchez collided with the backside of his teammate Brandon Moore and fumbled the ball, which was recovered by the Patriots’ Steve Gregory and returned for a touchdown.
The play was dubbed the “butt fumble” and part of a disastrous game for the Jets as they lost three fumbles and the Patriots scored three touchdowns in the span of 52 seconds. The Jets lost, 49-19.
The Broncos received Sanchez from the Philadelphia Eagles in return for a conditional 2017 draft pick Friday, the team announced.
The Super Bowl 50 champions lost their top two quarterbacks this week when Peyton Manning retired and free agent Brock Osweiler signed a four-year, $72 million contract with the Houston Texans.
