Play-by-play recap of the Broncos’ 24-10 victory over the Bengals

CINCINNATI — Phillip Lindsay shined with two touchdowns and the Broncos playoff hopes remained alive as the Broncos beat the Bengals on the road, 24-10. The win was the Broncos third straight victory. The last time the Broncos won three consecutive games was at the start of the 2016 season when they opened 4-0. First quarter The Broncos lost the coin toss and the Bengals defer, giving Case Keenum and the Broncos the ball first. Lindsay opened the game with a pair of carries for 17 yards to give the Broncos a first down at their own 42-yard line. A personal foul on Courtland Sutton set up a 1st and 26, which in the past has been a struggle for the Broncos. But Lindsay bet the edge defenders to the corner for 10 yards on first down. Then it was Keenum to Sutton for 12 to set up third and 3 at the Broncos 49-yard line, which they picked up as Keenum found Emmanuel Sanders. But despite the promising start, the drive stalled as Keenum threw back-to-back incomplete passes on second and 6 and third and 6. That forced the Broncos to punt, and put the Bengals at the their 5-yard line. The drive would also result in a punt. Midway through the first quarter, Chris Harris Jr. suffered a leg injury while tackling A.J. Green. He was not able to put weight on his leg and had to be carted off to the locker room. He was ruled out for the rest of the game. The loss of Harris is another big blow to the Broncos defense that is already without Tramaine Brock, Brandon Marshall and Josey Jewell. The teams remained scoreless as the first quarter ended. Second quarter More of the same to open up the second quarter of the game as the drives stalled and there were more punts. The Broncos tried to make something work on their second drive of the quarter as they got great field position and quickly moved the ball across midfield. Following a run by Andy Janovich and Lindsay, the Broncos got inside field goal range. However, Brandon McManus missed the 50-yard attempt due to the strong winds at the stadium. The first points of the game were finally scored with less than two minutes left in the half. Lindsay scored on a 6-yard touchdown run to put the Broncos on the board first. He completed the touchdown with a Mile High Salute to the Broncos fans in the north end zone of the stadium. The Broncos held the Bengals to a 35-yard field goal to end the half. It was 7-3 at halftime Third quarter The Bengals got the ball to start the second half and the Broncos defense forced a three and out. The Broncos didn’t do any better as they quickly punted it back to the Bengals on their first second half possession. But the Bengals muffed the punt and the Broncos recovered for the turnover. The turnover gave the Broncos great field position and set up a touchdown pass from Keenum to Sutton to extend the Broncos lead to 14-3. Justin Simmons intercepted Jeff Driskel to give the ball back to the Broncos. After a short run by Lindsay and a pass for no gain to Sanders, Keenum went over the top to find Sutton for 17-yards and a first down. On the next play, Lindsay took a handoff untouched for a massive 65-yard touchdown run by Lindsay to extend the Broncos lead to 21-3. However, the Bengals responded with a touchdown of their own as Driskel found Cody Core for a 30-yard touchdown to cut the Broncos lead to 21-10. Royce Freeman fumbled the ball and Cincinnati recovered to end the third quarter. Fourth quarter Following the fumble, the Bengals had the ball to start the fourth. But the drive stalled and Todd Davis was able to read a screen play perfectly on third down to force the Bengals to punt again. From there it was more of the same as the punts continued for both teams throughout most of the fourth quarter. A field goal from Brandon McManus extended the Broncos lead to 24-10 to finish the game.
