Turf manager has field in top shape for Broncos-Steelers game

Broncos field ready for action

DENVER — The Pittsburgh Steelers will be meet the Broncos in the AFC divisional playoffs on Sunday at Sports Authority Field at Mile High.

And they will be playing on turf.

Well, it’s not really our turf, it’s Chris Hathaway’s turf.  Hathaway is the Broncos’ head turf manager.

“I do love my job,” he said without hesitation.

Hathaway and his team of 14 maintain the super green gridiron on a year-round basis.

“We start in May with our first lacrosse game, so we have seven lacrosse games throughout the summer,” he said.

There are also concerts, charity events and special events that fill up the rest of the calendar.

“Whatever you can dream up, we’ve done it right here on the field,” Hathaway said.

Right now, fans are dreaming of a Super Bowl, which means the Bronco’s battlefield needs to be “ship shape.”

More than 300 gallons of specially made turf paint is placed on the three-quarter-inch Kentucky bluegrass.

The 80,000 square foot, locally grown, heated field upkeep is an all-consuming job.

So the million dollar question is who mows the lawn at Hathaway’s house?

“Me,” he said. “I don’t really like to take care of it though.”
