Fans react to Manning’s retirement, share memories of quarterback

DENVER — All across Denver, fans can’t say enough.

“It’s a celebration — of course about Peyton Manning. Peyton Manning calls it a career,” said Cecil Lammey, sports radio host with 104.3 The Fan.

With news coming that Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning is set to retire, phones inside the radio station lit up Sunday.

“Even through a season this last year that was so trying, that was so full of ups and downs, it didn’t go smoothly for him — and Manning still maintained that trademark sense of humor,” Lammy said in between taking calls.

“Favorite Manning memories?” he asks his listeners.

“Peyton Manning is such a big blue collar worker. He’s clunky, he’s clumsy are the things I’ll always remember,” one said.

”Great, great memories of Manning. Thank you Indy for another QB. That’s two that got championships that we drafted,” a caller named Ronald said.

“Thanks to Indy and thanks to that Irsay family. Way to go. Awesome,” Lammy said.

The Colts drafted John Elway but he refused to play for them, engineering a trade to the Broncos. Manning played 13 years in Indianapolis before neck surgeries forced the team to release him so it could draft Andrew Luck.

Broncos fans said they aren’t surprised with the decision, and many are happy to see Manning go out on top.

“I mean, now he will ride off on top,” Brandon Velasquez said.

“I think its the right time. I think its good to go out on top, similar to how John Elway did it. It’s a great time to go out,” said Darren Harrison, manager of Bill’s Sports Collectibles.

“You wanted to see Peyton Manning retire at the top with the Denver Broncos and that’s what he gets to do,” Lammy said.

More than memories, Manning leaves a legacy.

“For me, it was just seeing the talents Manning brought,” Velasquez said.

“He brought excellence on and off the field,” Harrison said.

As Denver prepares to see the Sheriff off, “There is a bond, a blood in the Mile High City,” Lammy said.

Fans say goodbye from a city that’s truly thankful.

“I would just say think you for being such a terrific player and working so hard,” Harrison said.

“Thank you for the great memories,” Valesquez said.
