DENVER — Broncos linebacker Brandon Marshall took a stand by taking a knee during the national anthem Thursday night in the NFL season opener against the Carolina Panthers at Sports Authority Field at Mile High.

Marshall recently told the Gazette he supports his former Nevada teammate Colin Kaepernick.

The San Francisco 49ers quarterback started a social media firestorm when he refused to stand during the national anthem at a preseason game against the Green Bay Packers. Kaepernick said he was protesting racial inequality in America.

Kaepernick took a knee during the anthem before the 49ers’ next preseason game, against the San Diego Chargers during a salute to the military night.

On Wednesday, Kaepernick responded to reports that his jersey has become the best-selling jersey in the NFL. He wrote on Instagram that he would donate all the proceeds he receives “back into the community.”

“I’m not against the military, I’m not against America,” Marshall said after the game. “I’m against social injustice.”

The Broncos issued a statement on the stance.

Marshall made no mention of his plans before the game.

Broncos linebacker and Super Bowl 50 MVP Von Miller said he supported Kaepernick.

“I’m not going to kneel for the national anthem, but I feel it should be a change. His actions really brought the topic, brought it into the conversation. I’m with Colin all the way,” he said.
