ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Broncos made a trade with the New England Patriots for tight end A.J. Derby on Tuesday.

In exchange, the Broncos sent New England a fifth-round draft pick in 2017.

“A.J. is a young tight end who can help us immediately,” Broncos general manager John Elway said. “He has tremendous upside and will fit in well on our team.”

Derby is a second-year player from Arkansas, but he missed his rookie season because of an injury.

He is 6-foot-5 and weighs 255 pounds. Derby spent all but one season as a quarterback with the Razorbacks.

The Broncos released veteran safety Shiloh Keo, clearing a spot on the active roster for Derby.

Derby is expected to add depth at tight end for the Broncos and contribute on special teams.

The NFL trade deadline is Nov. 1.
