DENVER — Rockies shortstop Trevor Story said Tuesday he expects to be out the rest of the season because of a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left thumb that will require surgery this week.

The Rockies put the rookie on the 15-day disabled list. Infielder Rafael Ynoa from Triple-A Albuquerque.

The timing is terrible. The Rockies are in a push to try to make the playoffs as a wild card team and Story is an integral part of their attack. After Tuesday’s win over the Los Angeles Dodgers, they are 3 1/2 games out of the second wild card.

“It’s very disappointing, very frustrating,” Story said. “The timing of it all is the worst.”

Story suffered the injury during Saturday’s win over the New York Mets. After surgery, the typical rehabilitation time is eight weeks.

The 23-year-old has a National League-leading 27 home runs and 72 RBI in 97 games. Story’s home run mark has also set a record for rookie shortstops in Major League Baseball history.

Story hit two home runs in his major league debut on opening day, the first player in the National League to do that. He has twice been named NL Player of the Week, for April 4-10 and July 18-24, and was named NL Rookie of the Month for April.

Manager Walt Weiss said he plans to use Ynoa, rookie Cristhian Adames and veteran Daniel Descalso at shortstop.

“I feel bad for Trevor. He was doing some special things, some historical things,” Weiss said. “We’ll be OK as a club. We’re playing well, we need to continue to do that, and I think we will.”
