DENVER — The Rockies designated shortstop Jose Reyes for assignment Wednesday, meaning the team has decided to part ways with the embattled player and will have to eat the nearly $40 million remaining on his contract.
Reyes was suspended until May 31 by Major League Baseball after the shortstop was accused of domestic violence while he and his wife were at a resort in Hawaii in October. Prosecutors dropped the charge when his wife refused to cooperate.
Reyes came to the Rockies in the trade with Toronto last season that sent Troy Tulowitzki to the Blue Jays.
The Rockies’ decision means the team has 10 days to trade him, which is unlikely. Reyes also has the option to a accept a demotion to the minor leagues. It’s highly unlikely he’ll do that.
The third option is the team will release him at the cost of what’s remaining on his contract.
