DENVER — Rockies shortstop Jose Reyes was placed on paid leave while he deals with a domestic violence case in Hawaii, Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement Tuesday.
The four-time All-Star will not be at spring training when Rockies position players start practice Wednesday in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Reyes is accused of domestic violence in an incident that happened while he and his wife were in Hawaii on Halloween. He is on paid leave pending the outcome of the criminal proceedings.
Reyes was arrested a few months after Major League Baseball instituted new rules regarding players accused and arrested on domestic violence charges.
The tougher rules allow Manfred to suspend a player even if a guilty verdict has not been rendered.
After the criminal proceedings are complete, Manfred will decide whether there will be discipline imposed on Reyes.
