DENVER — A broken water main on Blake Street forced the Colorado Rockies to postpone Saturday’s game against the Cincinnati Reds.
The game, which was supposed to start at 6:10 p.m., was delayed when the break occurred near 20th Street and Blake, the team said. All stadium restrooms were closed because of the break, and concessions were also impacted.
The team announced about 6:45 p.m. that the game would be delayed until Sunday. It will be played as part of a split double-header, with the regularly scheduled game starting at 2:10 p.m. and Saturday’s game beginning at 7:10.
Tickets from Saturday’s game may be used for the 7:10 game, or exchanged, the team said.
“It’s unfortunate but certainly no one’s fault,” said Rockies Vice President of Communications Jay Alvis.
Most fans were already inside the stadium when the main broke. The stadium put up signs on the screens and outside the restrooms to alert fans. Players were also unable to take showers after warming up.
Saturday night’s game was almost sold out. Fans from near and far came to watch Todd Helton’s jersey get retired. So for many, the special game was ruined, but will certainly be a night they never forget.
“In the history of watching baseball I’ve never heard of a game being at first delayed and then cancelled because you can’t go to the bathroom,” said Rockies fan Larry Juceam.
