DENVER — It was 70 years ago, only 25,550 days, since the end of the most devastating conflict in human history, World War II.

On Wednesday at Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum, some of the men and women who fought to end that war were honored.

“This is the 21st annual Aurora Veterans Salute. So we in Aurora have been honoring our veterans all that time,” said Sheila Anthony, city of Aurora senior recreation specialist.

More than 1,100 people were there, including 200 World War II veterans.

“It’s very important to the city of Aurora to honor and recognize their services and sacrifices. It’s part of the fabric of our community,” Anthony said.

Veterans from all branches were in attendance, including some members of the famous 10th Mountain Division elite ski troops who trained at Camp Hale Colorado.

Dick Over, from the 10th, received his old uniform at the event as a gift.

“I wish I could still fit into it. No way,” he laughed. “The camaraderie that we built in that unit was absolutely, well, I’d like to say it was as good as my dad’s Marine Corps semper fi stuff that I grew up with.”

It was a day of food, music and lots of well-deserved thank-yous.
