ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — A 55-year-old man drowned in a lake at Centennial Park late Monday night, the Englewood Police Department said.

On Tuesday, the man was identified by the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office as Michael Lee Blake.

Rescuers were called to reports of a man who went into the water but did not resurface at about 8:10 p.m. Witnesses said Blake went into the pond to get a remote-controlled boat that became stuck about 35 to 40 yards from shore.

Two Englewood police officers who were on patrol saw the man struggling and jumped into the water at 4630 S. Decatur St. to try to save him.

“They removed some of their equipment … their duty belts … and jumped in after him. They were able to reach the location where they saw him last go under and they started diving into the lake. They were not able to find him,” Englewood police Sgt. Brian Cousineau said.

Blake’s friends also jumped into the lake to assist with the rescue.

The Denver Fire Department responded and searched the lake with its dive team and water rescue personnel.

The man was found about 9:20 p.m. in about 30 feet of water. After being brought to shore, Denver Health paramedics began CPR and transported Blake to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
