AURORA, Colo. (KDVR) — Aurora city leaders discussed police department policy changes in a virtual press conference Tuesday afternoon.
Mayor Mike Coffman, City Manager Jim Twombly and Aurora Police Department Interim Chief Vanessa Wilson all spoke about the changes.
The Aurora Police Department is implementing the following changes:
- Ending use of the carotid hold technique, which was used on Elijah McClain
- Give announcements and warnings prior to shootings. An officer must identify himself or herself and give a clear verbal warning with intent to shoot, unless there is a risk of death of injury to others. This is how APD currently trains new officers.
- Duty to intervene is mandatory. If any sworn member witnesses another member using too much force, they must safely intervene.
