DENVER — A new video released by the Denver Police Department on Thursday, from an incident captured in August, showed an officer using excessive force against a suspect in custody.
The video, which was taken by a police body camera, shows an officer using his knee on a man’s neck to keep a suspect on the ground. The officer was cited for the incident and received a four-day suspension this past week.
The department confirmed the video was a reminder of how body cameras can help keep officers accountable for their actions. The video and report was released just two days after an audit found body cameras were only used properly an estimated 26 percent in 2014.
Last year 102 officers were provided body cameras in District Six as part of a pilot program. The Denver Police Department is hoping to expand the program this year.
