Bear scampers out of Avon apartment after trashing the place

Bear scampers out of apartment in Avon, Colorado

AVON, Colo. — A hungry bear made its way into an apartment early Saturday morning, waking up a resident who then locked himself in his bedroom and called 911.

“As soon as I got out of bed and turned the corner, the bear was right there,” Landon Mannick said. “The first thing I thought was is he going to pursue me? I’m fresh meat.”

Mannick said it was a black bear that appeared to be a cub and weighed about 200 pounds. The Eagle River Fire Protection District along with the Avon Police Department shooed the bear out of the apartment after it apparently opened the door.

“The bear actually opened the door,” engineer Richard Romsdahl said. “We blocked the two other ways out and the bear came out of the apartment and took off.”

When Mannick emerged from his bedroom he saw what all the fuss was about.

“(The bear) had taken everything out of the fridge and it was all over the floor,” he said. “There’s black smears on the fridge and oven from him being really dirty. It’s all over the apartment. He climbed into the bathtub and drank water out of the toilets.”
