WELD COUNTY, Colo. – The Weld County Sheriff’s Office said it will not pursue animal cruelty charges against the owner of a horse found tangled and tied up in a flipped over trailer.

The horse was discovered by a passerby on a rural road near the Roggen exit along I-76. The woman who found the horse said it had ropes wrapped around its neck, its hoof was cut and the horse was emaciated.

Investigators aren’t sure who abandoned the horse, but after checking in with its owner this week – they did not feel the owner was responsible in any way.

A horse’s health is judged by the Henneke scale from 1-9 (9 being the healthiest). The Weld County Sheriff’s Office says a score of 4-5 is ideal. However, this horse is at a 3, which investigators say is medically acceptable.

The Weld County Sheriff’s Office says the horse is receiving good care.

Investigators released a new picture of the horse, showing it on a farm in Weld County.
