U.S. 285 safety improvements on the way

Safety rail installation on U.S. 285

PINE JUNCTION, Colo. — The Colorado Department of Transportation is getting set to make some emergency safety improvements on U.S. 285 near Shaffers Crossing west of Conifer. Work began Thursday on the road with surveying and soil sample testing.

“To increase safety and help stop head-on collisions, this project will widen the median area, pushing the traveling lanes outside the shoulders,” CDOT spokeswoman Emily Wolfong said.

“About 1,000 feet of tensioned cable rail barrier are being installed in the new median. This type of work has been shown to reduce the severity of crashes and has been successful in preventing those deadly head-on wrecks.”

The work will be done from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. There will be no work on holidays or the Friday before Labor Day weekend.

One lane in each direction will be open when possible during the work, but if one is closed, plans call for pilot cars to be used to keep delays to a minimum.
