Two in custody after high-speed chase of carjacked vehicle ends in crash

A Dodge Ram pickup truck that police said was carjacked suffered severe damage after leading officers on a high-speed chase on Tuesday, June 30, 2015.

DENVER — Two suspects are in the hospital after a high-speed chase of a carjacked pickup truck ended in a crash early Tuesday morning, the Denver Police Department said.

The back of the Dodge Ram pickup truck was destroyed and its roof was heavily damaged after it appeared to have rolled several times and come to a stop in front of the Belcaro Motel (1025 S. Colorado Blvd.).

Police said the chase started about 1:15 a.m. near West Ohio Avenue and South Irving Street when officers spotted a truck that had been hijacked over the weekend.

The driver took off, reaching speeds up to 75 mph. Police used a PIT maneuver, bumping the back of the truck and bringing the chase to an end on South Colorado Boulevard between East Tennessee and East Mississippi avenues.

The driver and a passenger were placed into custody and were taken to a hospital with serious but nonlife-threatening injuries.

At least five cars in the motel’s parking lot suffered minor damaged.

Denver police said the vehicle was carjacked over the weekend and that a shotgun was used. Denver and Lakewood police spotted the vehicle several times in the past two days but had no luck trying to stop it.

Southbound Colorado Boulevard was closed at Tennessee as crews investigated and cleared the crash but it reopened about 5:40 a.m.
