A few months after Meryl Streep drew criticism over her “Suffragette” T-shirt that read, “I’d rather be a rebel than a slave,” the Oscar-winning actress is drawing ire again, this time for some comments she made at the Berlin International Film Festival.

According to the Associated Press, when asked about diversity in the film industry Thursday (Feb. 11), Streep pointed to the BIFF jury, which is half women.

“This jury is evidence that at least women are included and in fact dominate this jury, and that’s an unusual situation in bodies of people who make decisions,” says Streep. “So I think the Berlinale is ahead of the game.”

An Egyptian reporter then asked Streep if she feels she can understand films about the Arab world and North Africa.

“I’ve played a lot of different people from a lot of different cultures,” Streep says. “There is a core of humanity that travels right through every culture and, after all, we’re all from Africa originally. Berliners, we’re all Africans really.”
