DENVER — The brazenness and brutality of the crime stunned Colorado in March 2013 when a state prison parolee, Evan Ebel, was suspected of ambushing and killing Nathan Leon, a Denver pizza deliveryman.

Ebel is then believed to have used Leon’s uniform to trick Colorado Department of Corrections Chief Tom Clements into opening the door of his Monument home where Clements was shot and killed.

Two days later, Ebel died in a shootout with law enforcement near Dallas.

The Denver Police Department and the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office still say the crimes are unsolved. Yet documents obtained by the Denver Post indicate the Texas Rangers cracked the case just two months after the killings.

The Rangers’ report states, “The murder of the Colorado Department of Corrections Director was ordered by the hierarchy of the ‘211 prison crew.'”

Texas investigators obtained phone records and other documents that traced contact between Ebel and other 211 crew members.

Denver police and the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office declined comment because the case is ongoing.
