DENVER — If you bought one of the 400,000 drones expected to be sold this holiday season — don’t forget to register it first.

The Federal Aviation Administration’s online drone registration requirement started Monday.

All drones bought before Monday must be registered within 60 days, or by Feb. 19. Drones bought from Monday forward must be registered before their first flight.

Federal law requires a registration fee, so the FAA is charging five dollars. That’s also what it costs to register a large commercial jet.

Registration is good for three years and the five-dollar fee allows you to register multiple drones.

Plus… If you register your drone in the next 30 days, you’ll get your five dollars back.

The rules come as concern is growing about the risk posed by drones both to people on the ground and to commercial aircraft.
