LAMAR, Colo. — Two people were killed and several others were injured in an 11-vehicle pileup caused by a dust storm in southeastern Colorado on Wednesday night, the Colorado State Patrol said.

First responders from multiple agencies responded to the chain-reaction crash on U.S. Highway 287 about five miles south of Lamar.

Trooper Nate Reid said several others were transported to a hospital with injuries and that a dust storm caused the crash about 7 p.m.

Reid added the accident happened as drivers were heading northbound on the highway.

Southbound Highway 287 reopened about 8 a.m. Thursday but northbound lanes remained closed as the accident was investigated and cleaned up.
