JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. — A Colorado spring snowstorm caused a lot of trouble for travelers Friday, especially in the mountains.

“Both my granddaughters are there with both my daughters, my new grandson and today’s my wife’s 60th birthday. It’s kind of a big celebration today,” said Richard Thompson.

But much of Thompson’s celebration was spent on the side of I-70 in Genesee, instead of with his family in Grand Junction.

We asked Thompson how long he had been waiting and he replied, “About 3 and a half hours.”

Thompson, along with dozens of other drivers, spent their time taking a nap or trying to stay entertained.

“I’ve been listening to PGA golf on XM radio,” said Thompson.

Crews closed I-70 westbound at the Morrison exit at about 9 a.m. Friday because of accidents, low visibility and adverse road conditions.

Marta Acree kept checking CDOT’s website, praying it would reopen so she could make it to Aspen for a funeral.

“Of course it’s a big inconvenience because I want to see my family and it’s a sad time,” said Acree.

She ended up waiting two hours.

“I may not be able to make it,” said Acree.

But, others had the option of waiting until Saturday. “I’ll hang out in a hotel and have a few cocktails,” said Trisha Hyatt.

Either way, drivers said they’d rather wait, than take the risk. “We have a lot of nutty drivers who don’t know what they’re doing so it’s probably best to get it plowed,” said Thompson.

“I’d rather they close it so I’m not at risk getting in any accidents and be another reason for a funeral,” said Acree.

CDOT reopened I-70 westbound at 1:30 p.m. Friday. Eastbound lanes remained open during the storm.
