LAKEWOOD, Colo. — Gay rights activists held a demonstration in Lakewood to protest a baker’s decision not to sell a wedding cake to a same sex couple for a September wedding.

David Mullins and his partner Charlie are upset with the owner of the Masterpiece Cake Shop  who declined to sell them a cake after the owner claimed the decision was based on his religious principal.

“Everyone has the same rights, a gay wedding cake, a straight wedding cake…its the same thing,” said one protestor outside the store on Saturday.

News of the decision not to sell to the couple has lead to an international outrage online while many supporters of the baker’s decision are also making their voices heard.

“I’m a follower of Jesus Christ and you could say it’s a religious belief but I believe the Bible teaches that’s not an okay thing,” said Jack Phillips, the owner of the Masterpiece Cake shop during an interview with KDVR-TV on Monday.

Protestors held signs, chanted for “equal rights”, and pushed for a boycott of the property until the owner changes his policy.

“It was a very brief encounter but he made his stance with us and we made our stance with him,” said the couple about the experience.
