DENVER — Three boys were taken into custody after two handguns and a smoke device were found at Skinner Middle School on Friday morning, prompting a lockdown of the northwest Denver school, the Denver Police Department said.
The lockdown was put in place about 8:40 a.m. It was lifted about 9:15 a.m. and the school (3435 W. 40th Ave. , two blocks west of Federal Boulevard) returned to normal operations.
There were no injuries reported.
“We had a couple of juveniles that brought weapons to the school,” Denver police spokesman Paul Pazen said. “The students and the staff did everything that they were supposed to do to prevent any kind of injury or harm as a result of this action.
“Our students are to be commended for seeing something and saying something right away.”
Denver police searched the campus to make sure there were no other threats before the lockout was lifted.
Denver police added they did not know how much, if any, ammunition the juveniles had or what the motivation might have been.
Two of the boys were in custody for possession of a handgun while the third was being held for investigation of a suspicious device.
School officials also defended their decision not to immediately notify parents, adding a note will be sent home with students.
“This is an active investigation,” Denver police spokesman Sonny Jackson said.
