DENVER — The president of the Denver Public Schools board appointed a new member Monday night after FOX31 Denver uncovered the first choice for the District 4 seat had a criminal record.

The new member is Rachele Espiritu. The 46-year-old mother of two does not have a criminal record and is a small-business owner in Denver.

She was one of 10 finalists for the vacant seat, but the board initially chose MiDian Holmes. But the Problem Solvers revealed she was convicted of child abuse in 2006 and ended up withdrawing from the position.

“I have been committed through this entire process and want to focus on the future,” Espiritu said.

Asked why Espiritu wasn’t chosen the first time, board president Anne Rowe said, “We were in a different situation then. We didn’t have the full information we should have had.”

Espiritu will be sworn in at a meeting May 12 and will serve the remainder of Landri Taylor’s four-year term. Taylor resigned and her term is up next year.
