DENVER, Colo. – As a blizzard sweeps through parts of Colorado, including Denver, homeless shelters around the state are staying really busy.

On Monday, the Salvation Army in Denver prepared its two facilities for more than 800 homeless people. Four years ago, the Salvation Army said that number would have only been about 160 people.

A few factors, including high rent in the city of Denver, have forced more people onto the streets.

“I worry about people on a night like tonight where it’s cold and wet and going to get snowy later. So there’s no reason for anyone to spend the night out,” said Lt. Col. Daniel Starrett with the Salvation Army.

The homeless problem is so bad in Denver, the Salvation Army’s Crossroads Resource Center has less than a foot of space between each sleeping mat.

“I don’t like sometimes how close it gets. But look, I’d rather make sure people were close than have anyone stay outside tonight,” Lt. Col. Starrett said.

Starrett said the Salvation Army won’t turn anyone away during a snowstorm. He said the shelter will find space, regardless of how packed it is.
