DOUGLAS COUNTY, Colo. — A military Black Hawk helicopter from Fort Carson went down Wednesday afternoon in a forest in Douglas County.

All four of the soldiers on board were evacuated with two injured and taken to Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs. The other two were checked out at the hospital as a precaution and were released Wednesday night.

None of the injuries was life-threatening, according to a Fort Carson spokesman.

The remote location of the crash made communication difficult. It took first responders about 90 minutes to reach the crew.

“At least four members of our military are very, very lucky,” Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock said.

The helicopter was originally reported down in Elbert County around 4:30 p.m., but crews aboard SkyFOX said the crash was about five miles southeast of Devil’s Head Tower in Douglas County.

Fort Carson confirmed it was a Fort Carson UH-60 Black Hawk, the same model of Black Hawk that crashed off the Florida Panhandle in March, killing seven Marines and four Army soldiers.

At the time of the accident, the Black Hawk was on a routine training mission on U.S. Forest Service land in Douglas County. Fort Carson officials said the helicopter suffered a hard landing as a result.

Officials are investigating the cause of the accident.
