Hundreds gathered at Plateau Valley School in Collbran to say goodbye to 46-year old Wesley Hawkins, 51-year-old Clancy Nichols and his son, 24-year-old Danny Nichols.

All three were lost in last week’s Mesa County mudslide.

Hawkins’ wife Kayla spoke at the memorial hoping that her husband is remembered for the love he had for his community.

“He left that day with only one thought in mind… to take care of his community and keep the people safe,” he said. “I love you, Wesley, you are my true love.”

Clancy Nichols’ son Matt shared a tearful goodbye to not only his father, but also his brother Danny.

“I love you, Dad, and I will always talk to you, and I will always remember you,” he said.

The three men were in the area at the time checking on an obstructed irrigation ditch after an earlier mudslide.
