PUEBLO, Colo. — The first day of 2013 was barely a couple hours old when Pueblo police officers heard what they believed to be gunfire. Shortly after that, one of those officers became a victim of gunfire.

According to Pueblo police, the incident began when officers arrived on the scene of the suspected shooting at West 11th Street and North Greenwood Street. Officers then engaged in a car chase with a “suspicious vehicle” that fled the area shortly after they arrived.

That vehicle ended up crashing about a half mile into the chase in the 800 block of Craig Street, according to police. At that point, several occupants of the vehicle fled while another occupant fired at officers. One of the officers was struck but able to return fire, possibly wounding the suspect who sparked the gunfight.

A police spokesperson said the injured officer was transported to a nearby hospital with a gunshot wound, and is in stable condition.

Police said some of the occupants of the suspicious vehicle were taken into custody shortly after the shooting, while others — including the suspect who shot the officer — were able to escape on foot.

At approximately 6:20 a.m., scanner traffic indicated that a second shooting had taken place in Pueblo, and that the man who wounded the officer had been shot and killed. Police confirmed those reports shortly after 7:15 a.m.
