LONE TREE, Colo. — Residents of an upscale apartment complex said management has not addressed their complaints about a rat infestation.

The residents contacted the FOX31 Denver Problem Solvers about the problem that they said they have had for years. And it’s only getting worse.

So much so, the U.S. Postal Service has stopped delivering mail to the Metropolitan near Park Meadows Mall because of the rats.

“They definitely want to take our rent, but unfortunately they don’t want to fix the issue,” a resident said.

Holes directly under the postal mailboxes show where rats have been nesting.

“They have multiple holes up around where we get our mail right next to the trash cans and they’ve plugged it up multiple times with foam or whatever and they still eat their way through,” resident David Bjorklund said.

Residents found a sign near their mailboxes from the U.S. Postal Service saying the mail is being held because management has not addressed the problem.

“They’re in our walls. They’re all over the place. We find dead rats in the parking garage. I’ve called couple of times. A lot of residents have called,” a resident said.

After the Problem Solvers approached management about the complaints, some of the holes were patched with boards.

“Hopefully, with the post office putting some pressure on, it’ll help get things cleaned up,” Bjorklund said. “I mean that’s kind of a major deal when you can’t get your mail.”

“The postal service takes the well-being and safety of its employees seriously,” the postal service said in a statement. “We made the decision to suspend mail operations at the location until the issue is abated.  We apologize for this inconvenience and look forward to resuming mail service at the location soon.”

A man who said he worked for the company that owns the complex said management is aware of the problem and addressing it.

“They chew through the walls. (My niece has) seen them personally even as high as the second floor of this building where toddlers are walking around,” Deanna Cook said. “She has a child. She’s extremely concerned about the health ramifications of it.”

Residents said they pay a monthly fee for pest control as part of their rent. No one from the management company responded for comment.

Late Wednesday, a postal service spokesman said the complex had adequately addressed the mail problem and mail delivery will resume.
