DENVER — A pregnant woman caught on camera being knocked down by Denver police during her boyfriend’s arrest last year is now in custody.
After a year on the lam, 26-year-old Mayra Lazos-Guerrero was picked up by immigration officials in Texas and shipped back to the Arapahoe County Jail on Friday.
Tuesday, her family said they fear for her safety because Guerrero is scheduled to be transferred to the Denver City/County Jail.
Video of Lazos-Guerrero screaming for police officers to stop punching her drug suspect boyfriend before getting slammed onto her protruding stomach went viral last year.
The event has promoted a federal lawsuit from a bystander, Levi Frasier, who said Denver police tried to destroy his personal video of the arrest.
Lazos-Guerrero’s mother, Marina, tells FOX31 Problem Solvers her daughter is ready to cooperate with internal affairs investigators as long as she’s treated fairly in criminal court.
“Yeah, we think she will be strong to talk about it because she is really hurt about what happened,” Marina Guerrero said. “She’s really scared but it would really help her to speak out.”
Lazos-Guererro is being held in Arapahoe County for a year-old felony distribution of narcotics case.
Denver plans to take her into its jail in the coming days for charges stemming from the incident on videotape, including obstruction of a police officer, drugs and drug paraphernalia.
Lazos-Guerrero’s family said all of her criminal charges are related to her involvement with her former drug-dealing boyfriend, someone they say forced her to flee with him to Honduras then abandoned her.
