Homeowners wait on mortgage companies to get hail damage repaired

CASTLE ROCK, Colo. — Summer hailstorms have left homeowners with plenty of headaches trying to coordinate with insurance and contractors.

And as the FOX31 Denver Problem Solvers found out, some residents are stuck with leaky roofs and broken windows waiting for their mortgage company to approve repairs.

“They never told us why they are holding onto this money,” Castle Rock resident Ron Wittman said about his mortgage company.

“So far we’ve completed four roofs on this block and we have received one check,” Colorado Roofing Solutions President and CEO Chris Gonzales said.

The rush is on to repair the damage, but in a process that involves many moving parts, it has proven to be much more difficult than in the past for Wittman.

“It’s been a headache and we didn’t have to deal with it before,” he said about his previous mortgage company. “We sent it in, they endorsed it and we got it back right away. In fact, they overnighted it to us.”

Time is not on homeowners’ sides when they have leaking roofs and broken windows, and they say the mortgage companies are taking too long. It also leaves the roofing companies feeling the heat.

“It’s getting to the point right now where we’re going to have to put a hold on doing work in the town of Castle Rock until mortgage companies can catch up,” Gonzales said.

The Problem Solvers talked to the Division of Insurance  to find out what the process should be.

It said homeowners need to file a claim with the insurance company and if that gets approved, it will issue a check written to you and your mortgage company, which then should release the funds to you.

When asked what to do when those funds seem to get stuck, it said you need to really put pressure on your mortgage company.
