DENVER — Missing its deadline to make a decision as an elected group, the Denver school board will not get to vote on adding a new board member to a vacant seat in District 4.

Board President Anne Rowe announced during a special meeting Monday night that she will select the new board member on her own after “time is taken to reflect” and after the candidate goes through a robust vetting process.

The law required the board to appoint a replacement within 60 days, a time frame that closed Monday. If the board fails to fill the open seat, the president gets to choose.

The board tried agreeing last week by voting for parent activist MiDian Holmes.

But Holmes withdrew from consideration before being sworn into office after a series of investigations by the FOX31 Problem Solvers.

Holmes was found to have had a criminal history of child abuse and did not have a college degree.
