LITTLETON, Colo. — A pile of decaying animal carcasses near Chatfield State Park caught the attention of the FOX31 Denver Problem Solvers.

A Facebook post from Mitch Christofferson said he frequents the park and noticed the pile growing larger and larger.

“I was pretty surprised,” he said.

Tthere were about 15 carcasses only a few feet from the park and a couple yards from a pond, where people paddle boat and fish.

“If one of them has a disease and that leaks down into the ponds and stuff, that kind of contaminates everything,” Christofferson said.

The animals were dumped at the site by the Colorado Department of Transportation and they’re on CDOT land. CDOT said there have never been any health concerns associated with leaving the carcasses there and normally there are only two or three there at a time.

But CDOT said other animals haven’t been eating the carcasses and instead they’ve piled up.

“Generally it’s not a problem. It may be close to the park, but we’ve never received any kind of notice of it being a health concern,” said Bob Wilson with CDOT.

Regardless, after CDOT was notified about the pile by the Problem Solvers, it decided to do something about it. On Wednesday, CDOT said it’s going to remove the carcasses and take them elsewhere. If the problem persists, CDOT said it will no longer use the site.

“We’re going to definitely take a look at it and see if we need to make a modification as to how we do things,” Wilson said.
