DENVER — This election isn’t just being discussed on television; it’s being discussed in classrooms all across Colorado.
Teenagers debating the candidates in history class and over the lunch table.
At Eaglecrest High School in Centennial that is certainly the case. They have registered to vote more than 85 percent of their senior class through a partnership with the group Inspire Colorado. The students involved are set to receive an award from the Secretary of State’s office on Friday.
FOX31 political reporter Joe St. George sat down with three of the students involved in registering to discuss what teenagers think about this presidential race.
“A lot of people are frustrated with both Trump and Clinton,” Taylor Brown, a 16-year-old student, said.
Brown said students can be frustrated with the nastiness of the election — and actions that wouldn’t be tolerated in school.
“A lot of people are saying there is no respect between them,” Brown said.
Emma Lovato said, however, that the passion is real.
“We are all really passionate about politics,” Lovato said.
Lovato said teenage Trump supporters like his bluntness.
“Young people want people who tell the truth,” Lovato said.
She also said young Hillary fans like the “girl power.”
“Young women especially in this school are really excited to be here and some even to vote for the first female president,” Lovato added.
As for how teenagers are consuming the election? Mostly through social media.
“We get it mostly through social media, like we get it through Twitter, Facebook and Snapchat,” Josh Rasp said.
As for what students want discussed more by the candidates? Not surprisingly — it is education.
