Senate candidate holding gun giveaway to build caucus support

Colorado State Senator Tim Neville.

MORGAN COUNTY, Colo. — A gun is one of the first images you’ll see on State Sen. Tim Neville’s website for his candidacy for the U.S. Senate. And he’s not apologetic.

“I consider myself a champion for all Second Amendment rights for all individuals in Colorado and all across the country,” Neville said.

He’s also offering a chance to win an AR-15 rifle for anyone who caucuses for him on March 1.

“I believe the AR-15 is a great weapon,” Neville said. “They don’t have to purchase anything. They don’t have to make donations. They can just sign up for the opportunity for a fine weapon.”

Neville said he has seen no backlash, either.

“I haven’t really felt the criticism. I think people are pretty excited about it. We are just trying to get people excited about their Second Amendment rights,” he said.

Neville isn’t the first politician to offer a chance to win a gun for votes. Texas Sen. Ted Cruz is giving away a shotgun.

It’s also not illegal as long as there is not a quid pro quo offer.

Neville hopes this offer will help him stand out among a crowded field of candidates hoping to unseat Democratic Sen. Michael Bennet.
