School testing, lawmakers’ pay raises on agenda for final day of legislature

Colorado State Capitol.

DENVER — Wednesday is the final day for lawmakers at the State Capitol and the clock is ticking with plenty of work still to be wrapped up.

That includes work on a bill that would limit testing for students across the state.

Lawmakers debated the testing measure into the night Tuesday and it appears critics lost out in their attempts to limit the tests.

That sets up an agreement that is more along the lines of what Gov. John Hickenlooper wants. He and his fellow Democrats want to keep the ninth-grade tests in math and language arts.

Opponents believe children are taking too many tests and it’s taking away valuable teaching time.

Also on the final day of the legislative session, lawmakers might be ready to give themselves a raise.

The State Senate passed a measure granting the pay hike Tuesday and it quickly moved to the House. A final vote is expected Wednesday.

It would give lawmakers a 27 percent pay hike each year. The governor would get a 30 percent raise. Lawmakers argue they have not seen a pay hike since 1999.

That means lawmakers would make $38,000 a year and the governor about $117,000.
