DENVER — Gov. John Hickenlooper vetoed two bills Wednesday that would have basically eliminated the use of red light cameras and photo radar systems in Colorado.
The governor said the cameras are essential to traffic and pedestrian safety. He believes in limiting their use, but said the bills passed in the legislature go too far.
He said he would have supported laws that limited cameras to school, work and high crash zones with revenue used solely for traffic safety.
Critics say the cameras are used by city governments to make money.
Some municipalities around the country have banned the use of red light cameras and photo radar in their communities.
