DENVER — It was announced Monday that Wisconsin election officials will begin recounting ballots after Jill Stein’s Green Party campaign submitted a request.
Stein is attempting similar recount efforts in Michigan and Pennsylvania. All three states were won by Donald Trump, with Clinton losing by a combined 100,000 votes.
All three would have to flip in Clinton’s favor for the election outcome to change.
“It is mystifying,” said Mark Grueskin, a Denver election lawyer.
Grueskin was previously counsel for the Barack Obama and Clinton campaigns. Grueskin said it was baffling Stein would file a recount request without telling officials specifically what problem they think took place.
“It is virtually certain they are not going to find anything,” Grueskin said. “It’s like being on a treasure hunt and not given any clues.”
Grueskin was especially skeptical because the amount of votes Clinton would have to overcome. Recounts yield changes, but not that many changes.
“Often times, it’s dozens maybe hundreds. If it got to a thousand votes, it would be shocking,” Grueskin said.
The news prompted Donald Trump to go on a Twitter rant over the weekend.
“The Green Party scam to fill up their coffers by asking for impossible recounts is now being joined by the badly defeated & demoralized Dems,” Trump tweeted.
Grueskin clarified Clinton lawyers will be on the ground in recount states but they are not leading the effort.
“The Clinton campaign is not behind this, they haven’t supported it, but they want to know whats’ going on,” Grueskin said.
Stein has raised close to $7 million — more than she raised during her campaign. It is estimated the Wisconsin recount will cost $3.5 million.
