DENVER — Colorado Republicans will skip picking a candidate for president at the party’s 2016 caucus.

The Denver Post reported party leaders voted Friday to make the move that will probably weaken Colorado’s clout in the nomination process.

The executive committee members canceled the presidential preference poll at the caucus after the national party changed the rules that require the state’s delegates to support the candidate who wins the preference poll.

Colorado is the first state to decide to skip the poll. Other states are still thinking about what to do after the rule change, according to the Post.

State GOP Chairman Steve House said the move gives Colorado delegates the ability to support any candidate eligible at the Republican Convention in Cleveland in July 2016.

The Colorado Republican Party will still hold precinct caucus meetings early next year to start the process of selecting delegates to the national convention.
