Police said they found the wounded man when they were doing a welfare check in the area of 20000 E. Mitchell Place just before 5 a.m.

When they arrived, a male cab driver was suffering from a gunshot wound. The man, later identified as 49-year-old Darren Bloomquist, was pronounced dead at the scene. He worked for Metro Taxi.

“I and the rest of the Metro Taxi team are devastated to hear that this has occurred,” said Robert McBride, president of Metro Taxi Denver. “This is not just a loss for Metro Taxi but to Denver community at large to lose such a special person. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.”

Taxi companies and drivers, unlike other for-hire transportation providers, are required to provide 24/7 service, McBride said.

“We mourn the loss of a good man, and we will celebrate his remarkable contribution to Metro and the Denver community,” the company said in a statement.

Metro Taxi will work with Denver police to find the suspect and to prevent similar violence against other Metro drivers.
