Police: Boys accused of bringing guns to school didn’t intend to hurt anyone

Students, parents thank Skinner Middle School teachers

DENVER — Police said three students arrested for allegedly bringing handguns and a smoke device to Skinner Middle school on Friday did not intend to harm anyone. Still, parents said the school handled the situation the right way.

Parents and students, who were off on Monday, welcomed teachers back to school with many holding signs saying “thank you.”

“The teachers helped us through and kept us calm,” said student Shaina Walsh.

“We never got a real opportunity to say to them on Friday and to show them our appreciation of how they handled the situation,” said parent Nicole Kezenske.

The situation happened on Friday morning when school leaders quickly put Skinner Middle School on lockdown after students alerted them of weapons on campus.

“It was a scary situation,” said Walsh.

Police found two guns and a smoke bomb on campus and arrested three boys.

“The students and the staff did everything that they were supposed to do to prevent any kind of injury or harm,” said Paul Pazen with The Denver Police Department.

On Monday, students and parents showed their appreciation to teachers. “They really helped us out and without that I don’t know what we would have done,” said Walsh.

“Processes in place and the training, it worked and it worked in this situation,” said Kezenske.

No word on why the three boys brought weapons to school or what charges they’ll face. District officials said they face mandatory expulsion.

Denver Public Schools met with parents Monday to give an update and address concerns.
